Myofunctional Therapy in Chesterfield

Midlo Myo Orofacial Myofunctional Specialties located in Chesterfield focuses on myofunctional therapy targeting the muscles of the face and mouth improving function, control and coordination.  Improper use of these muscles may result both physical and mental health issues.

Proper placement of the tongue and lips guides craniofacial development.  Optimal development results in an open airway and sinus cavity, as well as room for all 32 teeth in the mouth.  Crooked teeth are a sign that the jaw is underdeveloped.

Postural issues, head/neck tension, headaches, back pain, shin splints and plantar fasciitis are also red flags that the body is recruiting larger muscles to help the smaller muscles with their workload causing undue stress and fatigue.

Poor function of the mouth muscles often leads to breathing through the mouth instead of through the nose.   It is likely that those that snore, wet the bed, have dark circles under the eyes, chapped lip, gingivitis, enlarged tonsils, allergies or asthma are breathing through the mouth during the day and/or at night.

Mouth breathing is considered rescue breathing and is not supposed to be our primary method for breathing.  It activates a state of “fight or flight” increasing the heartrate, blood pressure and decreasing the body’s ability to supply oxygen to the brain and other cells.  Poor sleep and the inability to supply cells with an adequate amount of oxygen to recover from the day’s activities amplifies conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, hyperactivity, impulsivity, irritability, brain fog, the ability to focus, oppositional behaviors and chronic fatigue.  Temporomandibular joint pain or grinding of the teeth can also be a sign of interrupted sleep.

More About Chesterfield

Located just south of the state capital, Chesterfield County  is one of Virginia’s most historic and rapidly growing localities. As of 2025, it stands as the fourth-most populous county in the Commonwealth, with an estimated population nearing 400,000 residents. Bounded by the James River to the north and the Appomattox River to the south, Chesterfield offers a unique blend of suburban convenience, natural beauty, and deep American roots.

Historical Significance

Chesterfield’s history stretches back to 1611 with the founding of the Citie of Henricus, the second permanent English settlement in the New World. The region is a land of historical milestones, claiming the first hospital and school in North America. It was also the site of the first commercially mined coal in the United States (1709) and Virginia’s first paved road and railroad. Named after Philip Dormer Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, the county was officially established in 1749 and celebrated its 275th anniversary in 2024.

Thriving Economy and Quality of Life

Today, Chesterfield has evolved from its agricultural and mining origins into a powerhouse for the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan area. In 2024, it was recognized for leading all Virginia localities in net population and income growth, driven by a high quality of life and a robust housing market. The average household income in 2023 was approximately $144,317, reflecting its status as an affluent and desirable suburban hub.
The county is divided into five main magisterial districts—Bermuda, Clover Hill, Dale, Matoaca, and Midlothian—each with its own distinct character.
  • Midlothian: Known for its historic village atmosphere and strong residential appeal.
  • Matoaca: The largest district geographically, featuring expansive rural areas and Virginia State University.
  • Bermuda: Nestled between the rivers, focusing on historical exploration and maritime heritage.

To support its continued growth, the county has invested heavily in infrastructure. Projects like the Powhite Parkway Extension and the development of Upper Magnolia Green—a 1,700-acre technology village—are designed to attract high-paying tech jobs and improve regional transit.

Outdoor Recreation

For nature enthusiasts, Pocahontas State Park serves as a 7,950-acre centerpiece, offering extensive trails for hiking and mountain biking. Other recreational gems include the Swift Creek Reservoir and the Metro Richmond Zoo. Education is managed by Chesterfield County Public Schools, one of the largest and most highly-rated districts in the state.

Whether you are exploring the authentic roots of the nation at the Henricus Historical Park or enjoying the modern shopping centers like Chesterfield Town Center, the county remains a premier destination for families and businesses alike.
