Treatment of a patient who has suffered a facial trauma is multidisciplinary and specialized. The goal of the specialist in orofacial myofunctional therapy is to promote the balance of the muscles of the face which may help to relieve pain, decrease swelling, improve chewing, speech, and the appearance of scars and facial aesthetics. Patients may also benefit from re-education of chewing, and breathing patterns. Although orofacial myofunctional therapy may help with speech dysfunction, it is not a replacement for speech therapy.
